Systems thinking is a perspective that helps us see and understand the big picture — the web of interactions that produces behavior — rather than isolating the parts one by one. It is at its most powerful on the problems that resist ordinary analysis: the complex, the recurring, and the ones our past fixes made worse.
Its foundation is the field of system dynamics, founded in the mid-1950s by MIT professor Jay Forrester. Where traditional analysis breaks a problem into smaller and smaller pieces, systems thinking expands its view — taking in more of the interactions that actually drive what we see. On dynamically complex problems, that shift routinely produces better, and sometimes startlingly different, conclusions.
